Drummers tune their tambors by heating them near fires lit in the streets of Montevideo prior to the parade of Llamadas.  One of the most imporant elements of Carnaval in Uruguay is Candombe, an African drum rhythm played on tambor drums.  It was revitalized in the Americas by black slave descendents as a way by which to reclaim their cultural heritage and battle for civil rights.
