In 2010, Montevideo, Uruguay was for a second year named the Ibero-American capital of Carnaval for it's annual festivities which commence at the end of January and last until the beginning of March. Throughout February there are daily performances of troupes known as murgas, parodistas, humoristas, lubolos and revistas - and yet the undeniable essence of Carnaval in Uruguay is Candombé, an infectious African drum rhythm that emerged out of Montevideo's black slave districts.
