Yemanjá is one of the most reveered Orishas, or deities in the Yoruba spiritual order that originated in Africa and is today prominent among Afro-descendants throughout the Americas. Known as the queen of the sea, rivers and lakes, Yemanjá is most notably worshiped in the Bahía region of northern Brazil. Further south in Uruguay, however - a country made up of roughly 10% Afro-descendants - the water goddess has a similarly strong following.
